BeyondCorp Weekly 44

Ivan Dwyer - December 5, 2017

I missed last week’s newsletter, courtesy of being in Vegas for not one, but two concurrent conferences – Gartner IAM Summit and AWS re:Invent. A lot of action between the two, but our most noteworthy activity was hosting a live viewing of Andy Jassy’s main keynote in a Venetian Suite. I’ve been to every re:Invent since 2012 (aka all of them), and have found that the keynote is better watched in comfort rather than squeezing in with the masses that early in the morning. As it turns out, many agreed with that sentiment, and the event was a smashing success! Believe it or not, there was a real life BeyondCorp newsletter subscriber in attendance, who also managed to walk away with our drone giveaway. It was random selection, I promise!

On to the big news of the day – I’m pleased to announce general availability of the ScaleFT Access Fabric, the backing data plane architecture supporting our BeyondCorp-inspired Zero Trust platform. You may recall the pre-release announcement in July, and we’ve since been working with a number of our customers on proof-of-concepts. We’ve learned a lot along the way about what people want out of a modern Zero Trust security platform, and are carrying that into our product development. With this announcement, we are one step closer to the goal of delivering BeyondCorp as a service, but know that we have a ways to go. We’ll continue to work on things like access policies, mobile device support, and MDM integrations to name a few.

Companies like Quid are on the path to BeyondCorp with us, and we encourage you to do the same. It only takes a few steps to migrate an application behind the Access Fabric, so why not give it a shot? You can try it out yourself by starting a free trial, or reserve a seat for an upcoming product demo webinar where I’ll walkthrough a step-by-step example.

Here are a few additional things that caught my eye this past week.

Redefining perimeter network security: The future is a hybrid [CSO Online]

Removing trust from the network doesn’t necessarily mean there is no longer value in its function, just that its role changes. In this article, Terena Bell explains the changing role of the network in a true defense in depth strategy.

First US Federal CISO Shares Security Lessons Learned [DarkReading]

Zero Trust has infiltrated the government (no pun intended), as the first US Federal CISO spoke to a D.C. audience about the merits behind the model. In typical government fashion, the sentiment is aroused in suspicion more than anything else, however it’s great to hear Zero Trust mentioned in this context.

Here’s What I’m Telling US Congress about Data Breaches [Troy Hunt]

Speaking of the government, security researcher Troy Hunt just spoke at a congressional hearing about data breaches – covering risks, causes, and mitigation tactics. I get nervous recording a 1:1 podcast, I can only imagine how nerve wracking this was!

Developers Care About Security, but the Infosec Team Cares More [TheNewStack]

An interesting set of results from a recent DZone survey that found developers more involved with security. It makes sense when you look at the intended outcomes of a modern security team - removing barriers. Enabling developers to ship applications faster does mean they should be more involved with security, and the more important the software, the more important the developers.

ScaleFT 2018 Predictions: Zero Trust Moves the Fortune 500 Beyond Network Security [VMBlog]

It’s that time of year – prediction season! Not to be left out of the fun, we decided to throw our hat in the mix. Here, ScaleFT CEO, Jason Luce, lays out a few predictions for next year. Most notably, that a top Fortune company (maybe even 10) will go through a security transformation on par with BeyondCorp. Any predictions of your own? Let me know!
